Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 16 oz 1 loaf of brioche bread, cut into cubes
  • 6 large large eggs
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar (for topping)
Optional Toppings
  • Fresh berries
  • whipped cream
  • maple syrup
  • powdered sugar

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Place the cubes of brioche bread into the prepared baking dish, distributing it evenly.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and salt until well combined.
  4. Pour the custard mixture over the bread, making sure all the pieces are well soaked. Gently press down on the bread to ensure it’s all covered.
  5. For best results, cover with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour or overnight.
Baking
  1. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over the top of the casserole and bake in the preheated oven for about 35-40 minutes, or until the top is golden and caramelized.
  2. Remove from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

Use brioche for best flavor, but challah or French bread works too. Letting the mixture rest overnight provides a richer flavor. Keep an eye on it around the 30-minute mark to avoid over-baking.
