Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef (or any halal ground meat like turkey or chicken) Ensure it’s halal-certified
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Ensure it’s halal-certified
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 3 cups tortilla chips
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Cheddar and Monterey Jack work wonderfully
  • 1 cup chopped lettuce
  • 1 medium diced tomato
  • ½ cup sliced black olives Optional
  • 1 medium avocado, diced For a fresh touch
  • to taste sour cream Or a dairy-free option

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef until fully cooked, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir the taco seasoning and salsa into the cooked meat. Mix well and let it simmer for about 3 minutes until heated through.
  4. In a greased 9x13-inch baking dish, spread half the tortilla chips at the bottom, then add half of the meat mixture. Sprinkle half of the cheese over this layer. Repeat the layers with the remaining chips, meat, and cheese.
  5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 20 minutes. After 20 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  6. Remove the bake from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes. Before serving, top it off with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, black olives, and diced avocado. Drizzle with sour cream as desired.
  7. Scoop out portions and watch it disappear!

Notes

Substitutions: Ground chicken or turkey can be great alternatives to beef, just ensure they are halal-certified. Timing: Allow the casserole to rest for a few minutes before serving; this helps it set up so it holds its shape better. Avoid common mistakes: Serve your toppings on the side to keep the crunch factor.
