Preparation
- In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- In another bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
- Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until a soft dough forms.
Forming Beignets
- Lightly flour your work surface and turn the dough out.
- Knead about 2-3 times just until it holds together.
- Roll the dough out to about ½ inch thick.
- Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 2-inch squares or rectangles.
Frying
- In a deep skillet, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully drop the dough squares into the hot oil in batches, frying until they turn golden brown (around 2-3 minutes per side).
- Use a slotted spoon to remove the beignets from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Finishing Touches
- Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.
