Ingredients
  

For the Dough
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg, beaten
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • Oil for frying Use vegetable or canola oil
  • Powdered sugar for dusting Generously dust before serving

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
  2. In another bowl, whisk together the beaten egg, milk, and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  3. Slowly pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir gently until a soft dough forms.
Forming Beignets
  1. Lightly flour your work surface and turn the dough out.
  2. Knead about 2-3 times just until it holds together.
  3. Roll the dough out to about ½ inch thick.
  4. Using a knife or pizza cutter, cut the dough into 2-inch squares or rectangles.
Frying
  1. In a deep skillet, heat the oil to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Carefully drop the dough squares into the hot oil in batches, frying until they turn golden brown (around 2-3 minutes per side).
  3. Use a slotted spoon to remove the beignets from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Finishing Touches
  1. Dust generously with powdered sugar before serving.

Notes

Serve with coffee or a sweet chai latte. You can also pair with a creamy dipping sauce or fruit preserves.
