  • 1 loaf loaf of bread (French or Italian) Use slightly stale bread for best results
  • 1/4 cup olive oil Can be substituted with melted butter or flavored oil
  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano Can be substituted with thyme or basil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese (optional) Add for extra flavor

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut the loaf of bread into small cubes, about 1-inch in size.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix in Parmesan cheese if using.
  4. Toss the bread cubes in the bowl with the seasoned oil mixture until evenly coated.
  5. Lay the coated bread cubes flat on a baking sheet in a single layer.
Baking
  1. Bake in the oven for 10-15 minutes, stirring halfway through to ensure even crisping.
  2. Once golden brown and crispy, remove from the oven and let cool before storing.

Notes

Store in an airtight container for up to 1 week. For longer storage, freeze the croutons for up to 3 months. Re-crisp in the oven or skillet before use.
