Ingredients

  • 2 packs Saltine crackers
  • 1 cup unsalted butter Can be substituted with unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 cups chocolate chips Use dark chocolate chips for a richer flavor if preferred
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  • to taste Sea salt For sprinkling on top

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
  3. Lay the Saltine crackers in a single layer on the baking sheet.
Making the Toffee Sauce
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the unsalted butter and brown sugar.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, stirring continually until it’s thickened and bubbling for about 3-5 minutes.
Assembling the Candy
  1. Carefully pour the toffee mixture over the Saltine crackers.
  2. Bake for about 5-7 minutes or until the toffee is bubbling.
  3. Remove the baking sheet from the oven and scatter the chocolate chips over the hot toffee.
  4. Allow the chocolate to melt, then gently spread it over the entire surface.
  5. If desired, sprinkle the chopped nuts over the melted chocolate and finish with a light sprinkle of sea salt.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Allow the cracker candy to cool for about an hour at room temperature.
  2. Once fully set, break the candy into pieces and enjoy.

Notes

Store in an airtight container. Keeps at room temperature for about a week, in the refrigerator for up to two weeks, and can be frozen for up to three months.
