Ingredients

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 large egg optional, for egg wash
Other Ingredients
  • 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or your choice)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh herbs (such as rosemary, thyme, or parsley)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Fold in the shredded cheese and chopped herbs until evenly distributed.
  5. Pour in the milk and, if desired, the egg for an egg wash. Mix gently until just combined.
  6. Lightly flour your work surface, turn the dough out, and pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick.
  7. Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out biscuits.
Baking
  1. Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown on top.
  2. Allow the biscuits to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

For best results, keep the butter cold to ensure a flaky texture, avoid overmixing the dough, and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Freezing is also an option for longer storage.
