Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Add the cold, cubed butter to the flour mixture and use a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers to work the butter into the flour until it resembles coarse crumbs.
- Fold in the shredded cheese and chopped herbs until evenly distributed.
- Pour in the milk and, if desired, the egg for an egg wash. Mix gently until just combined.
- Lightly flour your work surface, turn the dough out, and pat it into a rectangle about 1-inch thick.
- Use a biscuit cutter or a glass to cut out biscuits.
Baking
- Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown on top.
- Allow the biscuits to cool slightly on a wire rack before serving.
Notes
For best results, keep the butter cold to ensure a flaky texture, avoid overmixing the dough, and store in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Freezing is also an option for longer storage.
