Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef or chicken (or a plant-based alternative) Choose halal-certified meat if desired.
  • 1 packet taco seasoning Check for halal certification.
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or a blend)
  • 1 cup bell peppers, diced Any color works!
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 package refrigerated crescent roll dough
  • ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped For garnishing.
Serving Suggestions
  • salsa For serving.
  • guacamole For serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook your ground beef or chicken until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  3. Stir in the taco seasoning according to package instructions. Mix well and incorporate the diced bell peppers and onions. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until the veggies soften slightly.
  4. Roll out the crescent roll dough on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Arrange the dough in a rectangle, sealing any perforations.
Assembly
  1. Spoon the beef mixture down the center of the dough, leaving space on each side for braiding. Sprinkle cheese over the filling.
  2. Cut slits along the edges of the dough, about 1-inch apart. Fold the dough over the filling, alternating sides, to create a braid effect.
Cooking
  1. Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Let it cool slightly, then sprinkle with chopped cilantro, and serve with salsa and guacamole on the side. Enjoy!

Notes

Substitute meat with lentils or black beans for a vegetarian option. Watch the baking time closely; cover with foil if the top is golden but the inside isn't done. Avoid over-filling the braid to prevent leaks during baking.
