Preparation
  1. In a large pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Toss in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant, stirring to avoid burning the garlic.
  3. Pour in the crushed tomatoes, and sprinkle the red pepper flakes, dried oregano, sugar, salt, and pepper. Stir to mix everything well.
  4. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Taste the sauce and adjust seasoning as preferred, adding more red pepper flakes for extra kick if desired.
  6. Turn off the heat and let the sauce sit for a moment before serving it hot over your favorite pasta or as a dipping sauce. Garnish with fresh basil.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to a week or freeze for up to three months. Reheat gently, adding a splash of water if it thickens.
