Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
Bath and Topping
  • ½ cup baking soda (for the bath)
  • Coarse sea salt (for topping)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water, granulated sugar, and yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the frothy yeast mixture and stir until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  3. Place your kneaded dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces and roll each into a long rope. Twist into a pretzel shape and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  2. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and ½ cup of baking soda to a gentle boil. Carefully drop each pretzel into this bath for 30 seconds and then remove with a slotted spoon.
  3. Place the pretzels back on the baking sheet, sprinkle with coarse sea salt, and bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown.
  4. Allow your pretzels to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy with your favorite dipping sauces!

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2-3 days, or freeze for up to a month. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes.
