  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Ensure it's fresh for optimal rise.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk Can substitute with milk and vinegar.
  • 3 tablespoons honey Adds a hint of sweetness.
For serving
  • 2 tablespoons butter For serving.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt until combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the buttermilk and honey until well incorporated.
  4. Slowly pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients, mixing gently until a shaggy dough forms.
  5. Flour your countertop lightly and turn the dough out. Knead it a few times to bring it together, forming a round shape about 1.5 inches thick.
  6. Place the round on a parchment-lined baking sheet and cut a deep 'X' across the top.
Baking
  1. Bake the bread in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
  2. Allow the loaf to cool slightly on a wire rack.

Notes

Keep the bread wrapped in plastic or in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days. Refrigerate for about a week or freeze for up to three months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 10-15 minutes.
