Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for optimal juiciness)
  • 4 slices cheese (such as Swiss or American)
  • 4 slices your favorite bread (rye or sourdough work wonderfully)
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 4 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Lettuce (optional)
  • Tomato slices (optional)
Secret Sauce Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon mustard
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Method

Prepare the Secret Sauce
  1. In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, ketchup, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until well blended. Set aside.
Cook the Onions
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, add 1 tablespoon of butter and sauté the sliced onions until they’re golden and soft, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
Form the Patties
  1. In a bowl, season the ground beef with salt and pepper. Divide it into four equal portions and form them into patties.
Grill the Patties
  1. In the same skillet, add a little more butter and cook the patties over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness. Place a slice of cheese on each patty during the last minute of cooking to allow it to melt.
Assemble the Melt
  1. Heat a griddle or another skillet over medium heat. Butter one side of a slice of bread and place it butter-side down on the skillet. Spread a generous amount of secret sauce on top. Layer on one cheesy patty, some sautéed onions, and more sauce. Top with another slice of bread (butter-side up). Cook for 3-4 minutes, then flip and brown the other side.
Serve Hot
  1. Repeat with the remaining ingredients, serve warm, and enjoy your delicious Patty Melt with Secret Sauce!

Notes

Feel free to substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option. Adjust cooking time based on the meat’s lean-to-fat ratio for optimal juiciness. Ensure your skillet is hot before adding the patties for a perfect sear.
