Ingredients

Apple Filling
  • 2.5 pounds apples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Mixing different types enhances flavor.
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • to taste pinch salt Enhances flavor.
Pie Crust
  • 1 package pie crusts (or homemade pie crust)
  • 1 tablespoon butter Dot over the filling.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin pieces. In a large mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, flour, and a pinch of salt.
  3. If using store-bought crusts, follow the package directions. For homemade crust, roll it out on a floured surface until it's about 1/8 inch thick.
Assembly
  1. Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, pressing it down gently.
  2. Fill the crust with the apple mixture, mounding it slightly in the center. Dot the top with small pieces of butter.
  3. Cover the apple filling with the second pie crust. Cut slits in the top to allow steam to escape. Seal the edges by crimping them with a fork or your fingers.
Baking
  1. Bake the pie in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
  2. Allow the pie to cool for at least two hours before slicing.
Serving
  1. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Notes

For a perfect pie: mix apple varieties for flavor, consider adding vanilla extract or allspice, pre-bake the bottom crust to avoid sogginess, and monitor baking time.
