Ingredients

For the Wontons
  • 1 pack wonton wrappers (usually around 14 oz)
  • 1 lb ground chicken or beef (Halal-certified)
  • 3 pieces green onions, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 inch ginger, grated
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce (ensure it’s Halal)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • to taste pepper
For the Broth
  • 6 cups chicken broth (or vegetable broth for a vegetarian twist)
  • 2 pieces carrots, thinly sliced (optional)
  • 2 cups bok choy or spinach, chopped
  • to taste cilantro (for garnish, optional)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground chicken (or beef), green onions, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sesame oil, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
  2. Take a wonton wrapper and place about 1 teaspoon of the filling in the center. Wet the edges of the wrapper with water. Fold the wrapper over to create a triangle and seal by pressing down to remove any air. For a fun twist, you can bring the corners together and pinch them to form a cute 'purse' shape.
Cooking the Broth
  1. In a large pot, bring the chicken broth (or vegetable broth) to a gentle boil. Add the carrots and bok choy or spinach. Let simmer for about 5 minutes.
Cooking the Wontons
  1. Gently slide the wontons into the broth and let them cook for about 5-7 minutes. They will float to the top when done.
Final Touches
  1. Taste the broth; add more soy sauce or seasonings if needed.
  2. Ladle the wonton soup into bowls, garnish with chopped cilantro, and additional green onions if desired.

Notes

For best texture, keep wonton wrappers moist with a damp cloth while assembling. Feel free to experiment with different fillings. For added flavor, consider a splash of lime juice or chili in the broth just before serving. Avoid overcrowding the pot when cooking wontons.
