Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ tsp)
  • ¾ cup milk, warmed
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine the warmed milk and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast on top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour and salt. Once the yeast is ready, add the melted butter and egg to the yeast mixture. Combine it with the flour mixing until a soft dough forms.
  3. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm area for about an hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Punch down the risen dough and roll it out to about ½ inch thickness. Use a donut cutter or two round cutters to cut out the donuts and holes.
  6. Place the shaped donuts on a floured tray, cover, and let them rise again for about 30 minutes.
  7. In a deep pan, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry the donuts a few at a time until golden brown on each side, about 1-2 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.
  8. For a simple glaze, mix powdered sugar with a bit of milk and vanilla in a bowl. Dip the warm donuts into the glaze and let them set on a cooling rack.
  9. Savor the fresh, warm, and undeniably delicious Homemade Krispy Kreme Donuts!

Notes

If using whole wheat flour, be mindful it may change the texture slightly. Be patient with rising times for optimal fluffiness. Ensure the oil is hot enough to avoid greasy donuts. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days, or freeze for up to a month.
