  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (about 6-8 medium apples) Use a mix of Granny Smith and Honeycrisp for the best flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Adjust based on the sweetness of apples.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch Used for thickening the filling.

Preparation
  1. Wash, peel, and slice the apples, ensuring uniform slices for even cooking.
Mixing
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Toss until evenly coated.
Thickening Agent
  1. In a separate bowl, whisk together cornstarch with a little water until smooth. Add this to the apples and stir well until fully combined.
Cooking
  1. Pour the apple mixture into a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook and stir for about 5-10 minutes until bubbly and the apples start to soften.
Cooling and Storing
  1. Allow the filling to cool completely before transferring it into jars or containers.

Notes

Store in airtight containers in the refrigerator for up to a week. Can freeze for up to three months. Defrost overnight or reheat gently before serving.
