Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 loaf loaf of bread, cubed (about 10-12 cups for best results) Using day or two old bread works best.
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted For golden crispiness.
  • Maple syrup (for serving) Drizzle generously over the top.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cube your loaf of bread into bite-sized pieces and place them in a greased 9x13-inch baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and salt until fully combined.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the cubed bread. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down to ensure all pieces soak in the custard.
  5. Drizzle the melted butter over the top of the casserole, ensuring even coverage.
  6. Place your casserole in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the center is set.
  7. Once out of the oven, let it cool for a few minutes, cut into squares, and serve warm with maple syrup.

Notes

For the best flavor, use older artisan bread or challah. You can prepare the casserole the night before and store it in the refrigerator. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can freeze the casserole before baking for up to a month.
