French Onion Potato Bake

  • 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced Use starchy varieties like Russets or Yukon Gold.
  • 2 large onions, thinly sliced Sweet onions are preferable for flavor.
  • 2 cups shredded cheese Blend of mozzarella and cheddar works well.
  • 1 cup heavy cream or milk For a lighter option, use milk.
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For caramelizing the onions.
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Adds flavor to the caramelized onions.
  • to taste salt

  • for garnish Fresh herbs (like thyme or parsley)

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes until caramelized and golden brown.
  3. Add the minced garlic during the last few minutes of onion cooking, and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Slice the potatoes into thin rounds while the onions are cooking.
Assembly and Baking
  1. In a large baking dish, layer half the potato slices at the bottom.
  2. Follow with half of the caramelized onions, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
  3. Repeat the layering with the remaining ingredients.
  4. Pour the heavy cream or milk evenly over the layered dish.
  5. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  6. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Serving
  1. Let the dish sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs.

Notes

Use various cheeses to personalize the flavor. For added spice, incorporate chili flakes between layers. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and reheat at 350°F (175°C).
