Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook for 15-20 minutes until caramelized and golden brown.
- Add the minced garlic during the last few minutes of onion cooking, and season with salt and pepper.
- Slice the potatoes into thin rounds while the onions are cooking.
Assembly and Baking
- In a large baking dish, layer half the potato slices at the bottom.
- Follow with half of the caramelized onions, then sprinkle with half of the shredded cheese.
- Repeat the layering with the remaining ingredients.
- Pour the heavy cream or milk evenly over the layered dish.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly.
Serving
- Let the dish sit for a few minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs.
Notes
Use various cheeses to personalize the flavor. For added spice, incorporate chili flakes between layers. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for 3-4 days and reheat at 350°F (175°C).
