Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 cups cooked pinto beans Ensure they are drained and ready
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil For sautéing
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped For flavor base
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Adds aromatic flavor
  • 1 teaspoon cumin Spice for flavor
  • to taste pinch Salt Season according to preference
  • to taste pinch Pepper Season according to preference
  • 1/4 cup broth or water Add as needed for consistency

Method

Preparation
  1. Begin by gathering all your ingredients. Make sure your cooked pinto beans are drained and ready to go.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onions and sauté until they soften, about 3-4 minutes. Next, add the minced garlic and cumin, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
  3. Stir in your cooked pinto beans, mixing them with the onion and garlic. If your beans look a little thick, add the broth or water as needed to achieve your desired consistency.
  4. Using a potato masher or a fork, mash the beans to your preferred texture—smooth or chunky, it’s up to you! Cook for an additional 5 minutes to blend the flavors.
  5. Don’t forget to season with salt and pepper! Give them a final stir, and your Easy Refried Beans are ready to serve.

Notes

You can swap out pinto beans for black beans for a different flavor profile. A splash of lime juice adds zest. Ensure you don’t overcook the garlic as it can turn bitter.
