Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Cut the top off the head of garlic, exposing the individual cloves. Drizzle with olive oil and wrap in foil.
  2. Roast in the oven for about 30-40 minutes or until the cloves are soft and golden brown. Remove from the oven and let cool.
Mixing
  1. Once cooled, squeeze the roasted cloves from their skins into a mixing bowl and mash them into a smooth paste with a fork.
  2. Add the softened butter and salt to the bowl. If using, add chopped herbs now. Mix until well combined and creamy.
  3. Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed.
Serving
  1. Enjoy immediately or transfer to an airtight container. Refrigerate for up to a week or freeze for extended storage.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, substitute with plant-based butter. Monitor the garlic roasting closely to avoid burning, and ensure the butter is soft enough to blend without lumps.
