Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 2 large onions, finely sliced Slice thinly for even cooking.
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or a cheese blend) You can substitute with mozzarella or pepper jack for a twist.
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • to taste salt
  • ½ cup cold water Add gradually to form a smooth batter.
  • Oil for frying Use enough to submerge the crisps.

Method

Preparation
  1. Finely slice your onions. If sensitive to their aroma, refrigerate them for about 30 minutes before cutting.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, and salt. Gradually add cold water until a smooth, thick batter forms.
  3. Mix in the shredded cheese until evenly distributed.
Cooking
  1. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium-high heat. Test readiness by dropping a small amount of batter into the oil; if it sizzles, it's ready.
  2. Take small handfuls of the sliced onions and dip them into the batter to coat fully.
  3. Carefully place the coated onions into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 3-4 minutes per batch, flipping occasionally.
  4. Remove crispy onion bites and drain on paper towels to absorb excess oil. Serve warm.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a toaster oven or air fryer to retain crispiness.
