Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 1 loaf thick bread (like challah or brioche)
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 pieces apples (peeled, cored, and diced)
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • To taste Butter (for greasing)
  • To taste Chopped nuts (optional, for topping)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish with butter.
  2. Cut the loaf of bread into bite-sized cubes and place them evenly in the greased baking dish.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Add in the diced apples and gently toss them through the bread cubes so they’re evenly distributed.
  5. Carefully pour the egg mixture over the bread and apples, allowing the liquid to seep in. Press down lightly with a spatula, ensuring everything is coated.
  6. Drizzle the caramel sauce over the top, allowing it to ooze into the casserole.
  7. Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for about 30 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the casserole is set.
  8. Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving. Top with additional caramel and chopped nuts if desired.

Notes

Use stale bread for better texture. Customize apples to your preference and ensure resting time after baking for flavor development.
