Ingredients

Protein
  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces or tofu for a vegetarian option
Marinade
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce low sodium preferred
  • 1/4 cup sugar brown sugar works great!
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 3 tbsp sesame oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
Garnish
  • 2 green onions chopped for garnish
  • 1 tbsp sesame seeds optional

Method

Marination
  1. In a bowl, combine soy sauce, sugar, water, minced garlic, and sesame oil. Add your chicken or tofu, ensuring it’s well coated. Let it marinate for at least 10 minutes for optimal flavor.
Cooking
  1. In a non-stick skillet, heat a tablespoon of oil over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the marinated chicken or tofu pieces.
  2. Sear the protein for about 5–7 minutes, or until it turns golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  3. Pour the remaining marinade into the pan and bring it to a simmer. Allow it to cook for another 5 minutes, waiting for the sauce to thicken and reduce.
  4. Remove from heat and serve hot. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds for an extra crunch and flavor.

Notes

For a delicious twist, substitute chicken with shrimp or vegetables. Avoid overcooking to keep the protein juicy. Be cautious with the heat to prevent burning the garlic, which can lead to bitterness. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or frozen for about 2 months.
