Ingredients

For the Beef and Broth
  • 1 lb beef roast (such as rump or chuck) Choose a tough cut for best flavor.
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 onion, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
For the Sandwiches
  • 4 hoagie rolls Choose fluffy rolls for best texture.
  • Butter for spreading For toasting the rolls.
  • Optional Provolone or Swiss cheese Add to taste.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Season the beef roast generously with salt and pepper.
Searing the Meat
  1. In a large skillet over medium-high heat, sear the beef on all sides until browned (about 3-4 minutes per side).
Sautéing Vegetables
  1. Remove the beef and, in the same skillet, add sliced onions and minced garlic. Sauté for about 5 minutes, or until the onions are soft.
Combining Broth and Simmering
  1. In a roasting pan, combine the sautéed onions, garlic, beef broth, water, and Worcestershire sauce. Stir well.
  2. Place the beef roast back in the pan, spooning the broth over it.
Roasting
  1. Cover the pan with foil and roast in the preheated oven for approximately 2 hours, or until the beef is tender and easily shreds with a fork.
Assembling the Sandwiches
  1. Once done, remove the beef and let it rest for a few minutes before slicing it thinly.
  2. Lightly butter the hoagie rolls and toast them in a skillet or oven until golden brown.
  3. Layer the sliced beef into the rolls; top with cheese if desired, and serve with the broth for dipping.

Notes

For variety, you can substitute beef with turkey or chicken roast. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days or freeze for longer storage. Reheat gently on the stove to maintain flavor and tenderness.
